SYMPTOM
A dull ache or throbbing pain that starts or worsens after spending a lot of time looking at computer, phone, or tablet screens. This is usually down to digital eye strain, caused by focusing intensely on bright screens, not blinking enough, and poor lighting.
For general awareness only. This is not medical advice. If symptoms are severe or persistent, consult a healthcare professional.
Showing 6 causes
Digital eye strain
Prolonged screen focus fatigues your eye muscles and could trigger tension headaches.
Poor screen monitor positioning
An incorrect screen position could lead to neck and shoulder tension because of an awkward posture. Muscle tightness in these areas could radiate pain.
Accommodative spasm
Eye focusing muscles could get stuck in a tightened state from constant screen use, which causes strain and discomfort. This often results in headaches around the eyes or forehead.
Blue light overstimulation
Intense blue light from screens could overstimulate retinal cells and affect neural pathways.
Reduced blink rate
Concentrating on screens causes you to blink less often, which could lead to dry eyes. Dry eyes could cause discomfort and trigger reflex headaches.
Screen flicker sensitivity
Some screens have subtle flickers invisible to the eye, which could still stimulate the visual cortex. This overstimulation could lead to neurological discomfort and headaches.
