Showing 5 causes
Photic sneeze reflex
Sudden exposure to bright light, especially right after your eyes adjust from darkness, can trigger a sneeze in some people. This inherited reflex is sometimes called "ACHOO syndrome."
Dry overnight air
Bedrooms can get dry overnight, especially with heating or air conditioning running. Dry nasal passages are more easily irritated the moment you take a deep morning breath.
Dust or allergens near the window
If sunlight is streaming in through a window, you may also be near built-up dust, pollen, or pet dander on the sill or curtains, which can trigger a sneeze alongside the light.
Temperature change
Moving from a cool, dark room into sudden sunlight and warmth can shift the temperature and humidity your nose senses very quickly, which may trigger a sneeze reflex.
Morning allergic rhinitis
Allergy symptoms are often worse in the morning due to overnight allergen buildup and natural changes in hormone levels, making sunlight exposure feel like the trigger when allergies are doing most of the work.
